The series describes the exploits of the brothers Sam and Dean Winchester, who travel to various places in the United States investigating and combating paranormal events, many urban legends of American culture in addition to classic supernatural creatures (vampires, werewolves and ghosts).
The story is diversified, giving more importance to adding the mythological demons and angels repertoire whose occurrence fires the Judeo-Christian Revelation. Eric Kripke, creator of the series, Supernatural is based on Neil Gaiman's The Sandman; of the Winchester name may have been inspired by the widow Sarah Winchester, who built the most mysterious place in the United States, the Winchester Mystery House.
